Explosion proof mining remote control system.
Many applications for radio remote-controlled equipment present challenges that add complexity to a project. AJM Radio and Controls was asked to help with the conversion of mining crawler to remote control operation.
This crawler is used to move conveyor belts in hazardous conditions. The biggest deciding factor was that the remote system had to be explosion-proof. Naturally, this was a custom-built system designed specifically to the customer’s requirements. The remotes are designed to be reliable, withstand harsh treatment and operating conditions and ensure safe operation of the equipment.
The radio remote system can operate without or with a tethering cable for redundancy purposes so that the system is always ready to operate with or without a battery.
Intrinsically Safe Equipment
The radio remote system was designed to exact industry standards for potentially explosion-endangered areas. The tethering cable connects the transmitter to the receiver via a barrier, which ensures that explosion-proof standards are met, that the potential between the transmitter and receiver never exceeds these set standards. This barrier was designed by AJM Radio & Controls to integrate with our radio remote control equipment. The transmitter unit is designed to be intrinsically safe.
Intrinsically safe equipment is defined as “equipment and wiring which is incapable of releasing sufficient electrical or thermal energy under normal or abnormal conditions to cause ignition of a specific hazardous atmospheric mixture in its most easily ignited concentration.”
This is achieved by limiting the amount of power available to the electrical equipment in the hazardous area to a level below that which will ignite the gases.
Each individual radio remote control had to be certified explosion-proof with an external certification laboratory and permanently marked with the certification markings.
Autec Dynamic FJR
The remote used for this purpose is the Autec Dynamic FJR, which consists of joystick transmitting units and their receivers, suitable for continuous current applications typical of hydraulic machines used in construction environments, logistics, transport, infrastructure maintenance, mining and much more.
